Nursery Manager

Reports to Regional Manager/ Nursery Director 

Job Summary

To effectively manage the day-to-day running of the Nursery, including financial operations.  

To ensure that all legislation in relation to registration with regulatory bodies, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Birth to Five matters, special needs, safeguarding, Health & Safety is met. To ensure that all company policies and procedures are adhered to. 

To recruit, support, train and appraise all staff.

To ensure that all children attending the setting are kept safe and receive rich and stimulating play experiences appropriate to their age and stage of development.

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage/ Birth to Five Matters curriculum including overseeing planning and record keeping.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of ongoing internal programs 
  • Promote and facilitate partnership with parents/carers and other family members. 
  • Support and mentor all staff in carrying out their job roles.
  • Organise apprenticeships and mentor apprentices.
  • Identify training needs, develop a training plan and evaluate training undertaken by staff.
  • Develop and maintain highly professional working relationships with relevant Local Authority departments, regulatory bodies and other agencies.
  • Remain abreast of current developments in childcare and education policies and practices.
  • Operate the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the nursery.
  • Manage the occupancy to ensure it shows growth and meets the business aims.
  • Enrol new children onto the nursery system and set up accounts and payments for parents. Apply for funding for children if applicable.
  • Apply, monitor and manage all funding applications.
  • Facilitate Ofsted inspections and to implement any recommendations.
  • Promote the nursery to current and potential customers.
  • Help with marketing initiatives, open days and marketing events, representing the nursery.
  • Supply accurate monitoring information including occupancy overviews and competitor analysis.
  • Manage, monitor and control budgets and maintain petty cash systems.
  • Prepare salaries monthly and ensure staffing costs do not exceed budget.
  • Prepare parental invoices, send to parents and track late payments. 
  • Manage the recruitment, induction and probation procedure for all new staff.
  • Maintain accurate staff records and ensure nursery systems are kept updated; including for Bank Staff.
  • Hold regular supervisions and appraisals.
  • Undertake or assist in disciplinary and grievance investigations and meetings with regard to staff.
  • Lead the preparation and delivery of regular staff meetings, planning meetings and parents meetings and other events. 
  • Effectively use the computer and associated software systems that support the running of the nursery on a daily basis.
  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by management.
  • Ensure that the company ethos is underpinned in all actions and ensure that staff has a good understanding of the company’s values. 

Essential Criteria

Relevant experience

  • Experience of leading and supporting staff teams to improve practice.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role in the delivery of services to young children.
  • Experience of financial management and budget planning.

Education and Training

  • A Childcare and Education qualification equivalent to NVQ level 3 or above.

Knowledge

  • A sound knowledge of childcare development from birth to five years.
  • A sound understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Birth to Five Matters.
  • An understanding of a play-based approach to children’s learning and development.
  • Understanding of the role of the “Key Person”.
  • A sound knowledge of safeguarding procedures.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with all key stakeholders.
  • Effective leadership skills.
  • An ability to plan and organise workload.
  • An understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to use computers and software packages.
  • An understanding of Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • A willingness to undertake further training including some evenings and weekends.
  • A Car Driver

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience as a Nursery Manager.
  • A higher-level qualification in Early Years Childcare and Education/Childhood Studies.
  • A Management qualification.
  • A first Aid qualification.
  • A knowledge and understanding of research related to childcare and education.
