Funding Facts: What You Need to Know About Early Years Funding

At Maxxi Childcare, we know that early years funding can be confusing for many parents. With so many policies, rules, and expectations, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To help clear things up, we’ve put together this essential guide to how funding works and what you need to
know when choosing a childcare provider.

Understanding Early Years Funding

1️. Not All Nurseries Offer Funded Spaces

Childcare providers are not required to offer government-funded hours. It is entirely up to each nursery or childminder whether they participate in the scheme.

2️. Funded Hours Vary by Setting

If a provider does offer funded places, they can decide how to allocate those hours. Some common models include:
✅ 15 hours per week over 50 weeks
✅ 30 hours per week over 38 weeks
✅ Specific funded days (e.g., only on Mondays & Tuesdays for 10-hour days)

Always check with your chosen provider to understand their funding structure.

3️. Check the Nursery’s Funding Policy

Every setting has its own funding policy outlining how they provide funded places. Before enrolling, ask to see this policy so you can make an informed decision. Nurseries are not required to adjust their setup to meet individual family needs.

4️. How Many Hours Are You Entitled To?

Eligible families receive 1,140 funded hours per year. However:
✅ Funding starts the term after your child reaches the qualifying age (January, April, or September).
✅ Providers are not required to offer the full 1,140 hours.

5️. What Does Funding Actually Cover?

Government-funded hours only cover the basic cost of childcare—the staffing and supervision during those hours. It does NOT cover:

  • Meals, snacks, nappies, wipes, toilet paper, sun cream
  • Special activities, enrichment classes, or holiday crafts
  • Extra curriculum lessons (e.g., dance, language)

Many nurseries offer these additional services, but they rely on voluntary contributions from parents to provide them. Without these contributions, nurseries may be forced to strip back activities to a very basic level.

6️. Different Settings, Different Policies

Private nurseries and childminders operate as businesses and may have limited funded spaces due to financial constraints. Some nurseries may ask for voluntary contributions to maintain their quality of care and learning.

Government or school nurseries may offer fully funded places during school hours only, but be aware that some charge for absences due to holidays or sickness if they do not receive funding for those missed days.

7️. Plan Ahead – Funded Spaces Are Limited

Many nurseries have waiting lists for funded places. If you’re relying on a funded spot, apply early and be prepared to wait a few terms if necessary.

The Reality for Childcare Providers

Many nurseries are struggling to balance the costs of running a high-quality early years setting with the funding provided by the government. Some settings are withdrawing from the scheme, while others may close altogether.

Funded childcare is an amazing initiative to help families, but it’s important to remember that it is not free childcare. Providers are doing their best to offer funded spaces while maintaining high standards.

If you’ve found a great nursery that offers funded places, show your appreciation. The next year will be tough for many childcare providers, and they need your support.
