Here at Maxxi Childcare, we believe that the journey to Reception class should be one of joy, confidence, and discovery. As the Early Years sector continually evolves, our focus is always on translating the latest research and best practice into tangible, beneficial learning experiences for your child.
The most recent discussions within the industry, driven by data from the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP), highlight a renewed focus on two interconnected areas crucial for school readiness: Foundational Literacy Skills and Robust Motor Skills.
We want to share how our unique approach, central to the Maxxi Childcare Pre-Prep Program and our philosophy of Playful Learning, ensures your child is equipped with every skill needed to flourish in their next academic adventure.
1. Building the Foundations of Literacy Through Play
At its core, foundational literacy is about communication, sound recognition, and cultivating a genuine love for language—long before a pencil is picked up.
How Maxxi Childcare is Driving Early Literacy:
- Phonics Phase One Immersion: Our educators are expertly trained in Phase 1 Phonics, which focuses on developing children’s auditory discrimination, rhyming, and speaking skills. This happens organically during circle time, through songs, rhyming games, and especially in imaginative play, where children experiment with words and sounds.
- Rich Language Environments: In our calming, natural, and purpose-built rooms, language is constantly modelled by our qualified staff. We maintain a diverse library area, facilitate dramatic play, and engage in daily storytelling sessions that build vocabulary, comprehension, and narrative skills.
- The Power of Partnership: We believe you are your child’s first educator. Through our dedicated Parent App and regular key worker meetings, we share simple, fun activities you can do at home—from singing on the London Underground to spotting sounds in your local park—to reinforce the learning happening at the nursery.
2. Strong Bodies, Sharp Minds: The Motor Skills Push
It may surprise many parents, but the ability to sit still, concentrate, and write is fundamentally linked to a child’s physical development, known as their motor skills. We focus on both Gross (large muscle) and Fine (small muscle) skills.
Gross Motor Skills (Movement for Focus):
Gross motor skills—climbing, balancing, running—are what build core strength, which is essential for being able to sit comfortably and pay attention at a desk later on.
- Purposeful Outdoor Facilities: Our commitment to Holistic Development means we maximise time in our spacious outdoor areas. We use climbing frames, balance beams, and open-ended resources to encourage risk-taking and physical challenge, helping children develop their coordination, balance, and spatial awareness.
Fine Motor Skills (The Path to Writing):
Fine motor skills involve the small muscles in the hands and fingers, which directly affect a child’s pencil grip and their ability to become independent.
Messy Play with Purpose: Our approach involves a wealth of activities designed to strengthen those tiny hand muscles:
- Pinching and Squeezing: Activities with playdough, clay, and small tools.
- Cutting and Manipulation: Using child-safe scissors for collages and using tongs or tweezers to sort small objects.
- Self-Help Skills: We integrate fine motor practice into our Holistic Development model by encouraging children to dress themselves, fasten their coats, and manage cutlery during our freshly prepared, nutritious mealtimes. This makes learning practical and impactful.
