By Leo (Age 2 and a bit)

Hello! I’m two. Some grown-ups call this age “the terrible twos,” but if you ask me, it’s the terrific twos. My brain is growing faster than it ever will again, and every single day feels like a massive adventure.
Have you ever wondered what the world looks like from down here? Come spend a day with me at my nursery, Maxxi Childcare, and I’ll show you exactly what we toddlers need to thrive, how we really learn, and how my teachers make sure I’m making strong progress.
1. My World of Awe and Wonder (The Environment)
To you, a cardboard box is just recycling. To me, it’s a rocket ship, a dragon’s cave, or a sensory tunnel! At two years old, I learn with my whole body. I need a stimulating environment filled with things that make me stop and go, “Whoa.”
How Maxxi does it: The classrooms here aren't filled with bright, overwhelming plastic toys that only do one thing. Instead, the Maxxi team fills our space with "loose parts" like smooth stones, wooden rings, and shiny metal bowls. Every corner is a mini-discovery zone that sparks my curiosity. They call it an environment of "awe and wonder," but I just call it the best playground ever.
2. Play with a Plan (Purposeful Play)
I love to play, but did you know my play is actually my hard work? When I’m
splashing water or stacking blocks, I’m not just messing around—I’m experimenting.
However, I still need a little help to push my learning further.
How I Realize an Idea vs. How Maxxi Supports Me:
How Maxxi does it: My educators are masters of purposeful play. They observe what I'm interested in and subtly introduce a new challenge with a clear learning intention. If I'm building a tower, they might pass me a heavy block and a light block, starting a conversation about weight and balance without interrupting my flow.
3. There is Nobody Quite Like Me (The Unique Child)
Sometimes I want to run and shout; sometimes I just want to sit quietly with a book. I have my own rhythm, my own favourite things (dinosaurs!), and things that scare me (the loud vacuum cleaner). To thrive, I need the grown-ups around me to understand me.
- My Pace: I might take longer to put my shoes on, and that’s okay.
- My Interests: When my teachers weave dinosaurs into counting games, I’m instantly hooked.
4. My Big Three (The Prime Areas of Development)
| The Prime Area | What it means to me | How Maxxi builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Personal, Social & Emotional | Learning who I am and how to share space with my friends. | Co-regulation zones, cozy corners, and helping me name big feelings. |
| Physical Development | Balancing, climbing, and learning to use my hands. | Pincer-grip activities and big outdoor spaces to run, jump, and test limits safely. |
| Communication & Language | Soaking up new words and learning to voice my thoughts. | A communication-rich environment where teachers narrate my day, sing songs, and introduce cool new vocabulary. |
5. Feeling Safe to Take Risks (My Emotional & Physical Space)
I can’t learn if my tummy is anxious. Because I'm still figuring out the world, I need a rock-solid emotional and physical foundation. I need to know it's okay to fall down, and it's okay to cry.
How Maxxi does it: Maxxi has built a beautifully supportive environment. Physically, everything is at my height, which makes me feel independent and powerful. Emotionally, my key person is my safe harbour. When I have a big "toddler meltdown" because my tower fell over, they don't get angry. They sit with me, validate my frustration, and help me reset. That emotional safety is what gives me the courage to try again.
6. The 2-Year Progress Check (My Milestone Celebration)
Somewhere between my second and third birthday, the grown-ups do something called the statutory 2-year progress check. It sounds a bit serious, doesn't it? But to me, it just feels like everyone noticing how much I’ve grown!
How Maxxi does it: Maxxi makes this statutory check a beautiful partnership. My key person sits down with my parents to look at how I’m doing in those three Prime Areas. It’s not a pass-or-fail test; it’s a detailed, loving look at my strengths and a plan to support any areas where I might need a little extra help. It ensures my parents and my nursery are walking hand-in-hand on my development journey.
7. How I Really Learn
If you sit me down and try to teach me flashcards, my eyes will wander in five seconds flat. That's not how a two-year-old brain works! I learn through active, lived experiences. I learn by doing, tasting, touching, copying, and repeating things a hundred times until it clicks.
How Maxxi does it: Maxxi embraces the science of how toddlers actually learn. They give us time for uninterrupted play, letting us deeply immerse ourselves in our schemas (patterns of repeated behaviour, like dropping things or lining them up). They know that when I'm covered in mud, paint, or soap suds, my brain is firing on all cylinders.
A Final Note to My Grown-Ups
Being two is a magical, whirlwind time. When you guide me with love, respect my individuality, and give me a space like Maxxi to explore, I don’t just grow—I absolutely thrive.
Thanks for looking at the world through my eyes today! Now, if you'll excuse me, there’s a puddle outside with my name on it…
